Food Stamps For College Students

When people think of college expenses, they commonly think of tuition, books and other school supplies. Food is commonly overlooked as part of the daily expenses for any college student.

For some struggling low-income students, added financial relief going towards the cost of food could make a difference.

Although student financial aid benefits don’t cover for the cost of food, some students can still be eligible for one of the most popular forms of federal financial aid: food stamps.

If you’re a student and you wish to qualify for food stamps, you must:

  1. Work at least 20 hours per week for at least minimum wage
  2. Participate in a state or federally funded work-study program during the school year
  3. Be disabled
  4. Take care of someone in your household who is under 6 or not able to care for himself or herself
  5. Take care of someone between six to eleven years old where adequate child care is not available
  6. Be a full-time student and a single parent taking care of a child under age 12
  7. Be getting Family Assistance (FA) benefits
  8. Attend a school under the Jobs Training Partnership Act (JTPA)
