The move away from actual food stamps to Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards didn’t immediately have a warm reception among the 34 million people dependent on the food stamp program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP). This was because some retailers could not accommodate the EBT card due to a lack of EBT terminals. Qualified beneficiaries had a difficult time shopping for food and claiming their benefits, since their options were limited.
Thankfully, however, this dilemma won’t be a problem for long. EBT terminals are now becoming more common, appearing even in farmers’ markets. Soon, food stamp program beneficiaries won’t have any worries about where to shop for food.
Retailers that accept the EBT card include 7-Eleven, Target, Super Target, BJ’s Wholesale Club, CVS and Family Dollar. More retailers are being added every day.

Eligible food types under the SNAP program include:
- Breads
- Cereals
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Meat
- Fish
- Poultry
- Dairy products
- Plants and seeds that produce food
Alcoholic beverages, ”hot food” items and food that can be purchased and eaten at the retailer are not covered by the SNAP EBT card.
